Today, the municipal council dedicated an area to engineer Carlo Ghieri, the founder of M.G.M. Motori Elettrici in Serravalle Pistoiese.
Carlo Ghieri was born in Monsummano in 1926. He studied mechanical engineering and began working in his father’s company. Initially the family business produced various types of machinery and later, around 1947, standard electric motors. After a few years he decided to focus solely on brake motors, abandoning the other production lines. In 1958 Carlo Ghieri married Lidia Giovannoli. They had four children, three of whom are currently at the top of the company.
The unveiling of the plaque dedicated to him, displayed in the area adjacent to the company, was carried out by his three sons Lucia, Edoardo and Francesco.
The commemoration was chaired by mayor Pietro Lunardi, in the presence of the Ghieri siblings, their families and company employees.
“Carlo Ghieri was always deeply passionate about his work and dedicated much of his energy and life to the growth and development of his company, with which he strongly identified. He had multiple interests in culture and sports, although most of his time outside of work was dedicated to his family. Carlo Ghieri was an ‘enlightened’ entrepreneur, attentive—though in a reserved way—to the needs of the local community. His sense of social responsibility and concern for his employees were always key aspects of his work. From 1947 to today the company has never resorted to layoffs and has always played a key role, both directly and indirectly, in the economy of the municipality of Serravalle.”
Also present were Roberto Bardelli, councilor for tourism, Maurizio Bruschi, councilor for roads, municipal police, and sports, and city councilor Spinelli. Representing the law enforcement were sergeant major Fabio Rutigliano of the Serravalle Carabinieri station and officers Francesco Calabrese and Rossana Rendina.
M.G.M. Motori Elettrici was founded in 1945 in Monsummano and moved to Serravalle Pistoiese in 1970. Currently around one hundred people work at the Serravalle site, many of whom live in the surrounding areas. Since 2001 international branches have been added (Montreal-Canada, Chennai-India, Izmir-Turkey, Detroit-USA) to the main one in Serravalle Pistoiese. All brake motors sold at these locations are still produced by MGM in Serravalle, a symbol of “Made in Italy” excellence.
M.G.M. Motori Elettrici is now present worldwide with distributors in over 75 countries. It is difficult anywhere in the world to see, wear, or use something that doesn’t have at least one component made by MGM motors from Serravalle Pistoiese.
Millions of motors have been produced, and each plaque on them bears the name of Serravalle Pistoiese. Interestingly, in the past, some Chinese copies of MGM products had “Serravalle Pistoiese” written on their plaques, mistakenly considered a technical characteristic of the product.
